Recognize that conscious access is limited and selective. You only become aware of information that reaches threshold for global broadcast. Most decision-making happens unconsciously with consciousness observing results. This means conscious introspection reveals post-hoc explanations rather than actual causes. Be humble about knowing why you think or feel as you do.
Use attention deliberately to shape conscious experience. Since attention determines what reaches awareness, where you direct attention shapes your subjective reality. This isn't just metaphor—you're literally changing which neural patterns amplify into consciousness. Meditation practices that train attention are training what you become conscious of.
Understand that altered states provide genuine insights into consciousness structure. These aren't just distortions but reveal different modes of neural organization. The experiences during psychedelics, deep meditation, or flow states show possibilities for consciousness beyond default configurations. This knowledge can inform both personal development and understanding of mental function.
Accept the limits of current understanding about consciousness. We have correlates—brain states associated with conscious experience—but not explanations of how physical processes produce subjective experience. This doesn't mean dualism is correct, but it means humility about what neuroscience has actually explained. Use what's known to work without needing complete theoretical understanding.
